What to Expect
To seek service at the endoscopy center, you may need a referral from your family physician to see one of our specialized Gastroenterologists. They will visit with you in their office and then schedule a time for your procedure at our center. A few days prior to your procedure a nurse will call you to gather information about your medical history and answer any questions you may have. Preparation may include a clear liquid diet, taking laxatives and/or fasting. Your nurse will inform you what time to arrive at the facility for your procedure; generally one hour before your scheduled appointment and you will be finished in about two hours. On the day of your procedure, you will register in the business office and then be brought back into the preoperative area. Shortly thereafter you will come back to the procedure room and receive medication to help you relax. Most patients do not remember the procedure because of the medication. After the procedure is complete, your physician will visit with you in the postoperative area about their findings and you will be given discharge instructions. You need to have a family member or friend drive you home because of the effects of the medication. Within a few hours after the procedure, most patients are back to eating regular meals and returning to normal activities the next day.
Common Procedures
The most common procedures performed at Sutter Roseville Endoscopy Center are colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD or upper endoscopy). A colonoscopy is a test that allows your doctor to look at the inner lining of your large intestine (colon). Your physician will use a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope to look at the colon. A colonoscopy helps find polyps, tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding. During a colonoscopy, tissue samples can be collected biopsy and abnormal growths (polyps) can be removed to check for cancer or precancerous growths. Most experts agree colon cancer screening should start at the age of 50. The frequency of repeat colonoscopies depends upon on your risk.
An esophagogastroduodenoscopy, EGD, or upper endoscopy allows your physician to look at the interior lining of your upper gastrointestinal tract through a thin, flexible viewing instrument called an endoscope. The tip of the endoscope is inserted through your mouth and then gently moved down your throat into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (the first part of your small intestine). Endoscopy can reveal problems that do not show up on X-ray tests, associated with heartburn, ulcers, pain or indigestion.
